Generic Zovirax
(Generic name: Acyclovir)
Drug Uses
Acyclovir is used to treat herpes virus infections such as genital herpes, shingles,
herpes simplex infections and chicken pox.
How Taken
Acyclovir is available in oral forms. Each dose, up to 1200mg a day should be
distributed evenly every 4 to 8 hours. For shingles, each dose, up to 4000mg a
day should be evenly distributed over each 4 hour period. For the treatment of
Chicken Pox, up to 800mg, not to exceed 3200mg per day four times a day.
Warnings&Precautions
Before taking Acyclovir, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to acyclovir.
Acyclovir is not a cure and will not help prevent you from spreading herpes infections to others.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of an oral form of Acyclovir, take it as soon as you remember,
up to two hours late. If your missed dose is more than two hours late, wait for the next
scheduled dose. If the topical ointment is forgotten, apply as soon as you remember.
Possible Side Effects
There are no known serious side effects associated with the used of Acyclovir.
Common side effects may include a rash on the skin, nausea and vomiting.
The ointment can cause pain, burning or itching at the application site.
Should you experience an adverse reaction, notify your doctor.
Storage
Store Acyclovir in a dry place at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
Refrigerate liquid but do not freeze.
Overdose
An overdose of acyclovir is unlikely to be life-threatening, however call the doctor if you suspect an overdose.
More Information
Do not stop taking Acyclovir even if you begin to feel better, but do not
take it for any longer than the prescribed period.
