Amantadine
Drug Uses
Amantadine is used to treat or prevent type A influenza and Parkinson’s disease as well as
to reduce stiffness and shaking caused by other medications.
How Taken
Adults may take 100 – 200mg per day for five days. Children: up to 150mg one time a day.
The maximum does is 400mg once a day.
Warnings/Precautions
Persons over the age of 60 are generally more sensitive to Amantadine and may
need to have their dosage adjusted. Do not drive until you know how the drug will affect you. Avoid alcohol.
Missed Dose
If you miss a does, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the
time for your next dose, skip the missed doe and resume your normal schedule.
Possible Side Effects
Skin rash, confusion, seizures, hallucinations, swelling in feet or arms
and difficulty breathing are serious side effects and your doctor should be notified immediately.
Some dizziness, irritability, distractibility or difficulty sleeping are less serious side effects.
Storage
Store in tightly sealed container and keep away from heat and direct light.
Overdose
If you suspect on overdose, contact your doctor immediately.
Symptoms may appear as hyperactivity, confusion, disorientation, visual hallucination,
a drop in blood pressure, seizures or heart rhythm disturbances.
More Information
Do not stop taking Amantadine without consulting your doctor.
If taken for influenza, finish the complete dose.
