(Generic name: Leflunomide)
Arava Uses
Arava is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis by reducing the inflammation in the joints.
How Taken Arava
Arava is usually taken in 100mg for the first three days followed by 20mg per day.
Adjustments to the dosage may be warranted if side effects begin to appear.
It may take up to 4 weeks before you notice any improvement.
Arava Precautions
Arava suppresses immune cells that are necessary for the production of DNA and RNA.
Without these two the immune cells can't multiply or function.
Therefore, do not take this medication alone as it must be accompanied by
other drugs approved for treating rheumatoid arthritis.
Arava Side Effects
Side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, rash, itching, loss or thinning
of hair and weight loss. Less serious side effects might include high blood pressure,
chest pain and abnormal heart beat.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.
Storage
Store Arava at room temperature and keep away from direct heat and light.
Arava Overdose
If your blood levels are persistently higher than twice the limit of normal,
you should stop taking Arava.
More Information
It is not known if ingestion of food or alcohol interacts with Arava.
Infections such as respiratory tract and abnormal liver tests are the most
reported problems as a result of taking Arava.
