Clonidine
Drug Uses
Clonidine is used to treat high blood pressure by acting on certain areas of the
central nervous system that regulate the activity of the heart and the smooth muscle
tissue around the arteries. It causes the blood vessels to relax and widens,
which lowers blood pressure.
How Taken
Adults are to take an initial dose of .1mg twice a day.
The doctor may increase this to .3mg twice a day
Warnings/Precautions
This medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid potentially dangerous
activities until you know how this medication will affect you.
Missed Dose
Take it as soon as you remember unless the time for your next scheduled dose is
within the next two hours. If so, skip the missed dose and resume normal schedule.
If you miss more than one day’s dose, inform your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Serious side effects are less likely when clonidine is used as directed.
Storage
Store in tightly sealed container and keep away from heat, moisture and direct light.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms might include
low blood pressure, slow heart beat, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, confusion, weakness or fainting.
More Information
Tell your doctor if you have any of the following: heart or blood vessel disease,
including strokes and cardiac arrhythmias, skin disease, such as scleroderma,
kidney disease, mental depression or Raynaud’s syndrome.
