Generic Compazine
(Generic name: Prochlorperazine Maleate)
Drug Uses
Compazine is used to treat severe nausea and vomiting by suppressing the trigger zones
of the brain and gastrointestinal tract that control the vomiting reflexes.
How Taken
Usual adult dose consists of 5 to 10mg initially three to four times per day.
The doctor may increase the dose as needed and tolerated.
Compazine Precautions
Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures or hot climates while taking this drug.
Drink plenty of fluids and try to stay cool. Do not drive or engage in hazardous work until
you determine how the medicine will affect you. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
Missed Dose
Take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time for your next dose, skip the missed
dose and resume your regular dosage schedule.
Compazine Side Effects
Serious side effects include rapid heart beat, profuse sweating, seizures, difficulty
breathing, neck stiffness, swelling of the tongue, difficulty swallowing and should
be reported to your doctor immediately. A rare condition can develop called neuroleptic
malignant syndrome, characterized by stiffness or spasms of the muscles, high fever and confusion.
If you experience any of these, notify your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store in tightly sealed container and keep away from heat and direct light
Overdose
Symptoms that might occur as a result of an overdose include extreme drowsiness,
heart beat irregularities, dry mouth, paradoxical restlessness or agitation,
seizures and loss of consciousness.

Consult your doctor for specific advice if you are taking antidepressants, antihistamines,
antihypertnesives, clozapine, lithium, anticonvulsants, bupropion, barbiturates,
dronabinol, ethinamate, fluoxentine, guanethidine, guanfacine, methyldopa, carbamazepine,
rifampin or trihexyphenidyl. Do not stop taking the drug unless directed by your doctor.
