Generic Coumadin
(Generic name: Warfarin Sodium)
Coumadin Uses
Coumadin is prescribed to prevent blood from clotting in patients suffering from heart,
lung and blood vessel disorders that could lead to heart attack, stroke or other problems.
How Taken
Adults are to take 10 to 15mg daily to start. Long-term usually 2 to 10mg per day.
Coumadin should be taken at the same time every day.
Coumadin Precautions
If you are over the age of 60, side effects may be more likely and sever in older patients.
Avoid driving if you experience blurred vision or dizziness. Alcohol can increase or
decrease the effects of coumadin. If pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, do not take coumadin.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s time for the next dose.
In that case, skip the dose and resume your regular dosage schedule. Do not double the next dose.
Coumadin Side Effects
Serious side effects should be reported to your doctor immediately.
These include an allergic reaction marked by wheezing, breathing difficulty,
hives or swelling of the lips or tongue and throat. Other serious side effects are
bleeding into skin and soft tissue, abnormal bleeding from nose, gastrointestinal tract,
urinary tract or uterus, severe infection, excessive or unexpected menstrual bleeding,
black vomit, and bruises or purple marks on the skin. If any of these occur,
contact your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store in tightly sealed container and keep away from heat and direct light.
Coumadin - Overdose
Symptoms such as bleeding gums, uncontrolled nose bleeds and blood in the urine or
stool should be reported to your doctor. Stop taking the medication and get to the
nearest emergency center right away.
More Information
Avoid green, leafy vegetables and other foods that are rich in Vitamin K as this is
the compound that causes blood to clot. Tell your doctor if you have high blood
pressure, diabetes, serious liver or kidney disease or a severe allergy.
