Generic Glucotrol
(Generic name: Glipizide)
Drug Uses
Glucatrol is used to treat diabetes in patients who require little of no injectable insulin.
It is used in conjunction with a special diet and exercise.
How Taken
Usual starting does is 5mg per day taken 30 minutes before breakfast.
Dosage should be adjusted by 2.5 to 5mg per day based on blood sugar response.
When greater than 15mg a day, dosages should be divided. In the elderly or patients with
liver disease, the initial dose should be 2.5mg a day.
Glucotrol Precautions
Adverse reactions may be more likely and more severe in older patients.
Do not drive or engage in hazardous work until it is determined how this drug will affect you.
Drink alcohol only in moderation while taking Glucotrol.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose of Glucotrol as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time
for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume a regular dosing schedule.
Do not double the next dose.
Glucotrol Side Effects
Possible side effects may indicate hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.
These symptoms include perspiration or a cold sweat, restlessness, rapid pulse,
anxious feeling, nausea, feelings of dizziness, weakness, or lightheadedness.
Poor coordination, slurred speech, confusion, sleepiness, seizures or convulsions,
weakness of an arm or leg or an entire side of the body and fainting are very
serious and should be treated by a doctor immediately.
Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from direct light and extremes in temperature.
Overdose
Symptoms of an overdose are similar to side effects.
More Information
Keep simple sugars like juice and candy bars on hand in the event of hypoglycemia.
Inform your doctor promptly of changes in how you feel. Unusually high or low results
for any at-home tests and episodes of low blood sugar or pregnancy should be reported to your doctor.
