Generic Imodium
(Generic name: Loperamide)
Drug Uses
Imodium is used to treat diarrhea.
How Taken
Capsules – Adults and teenagers, 4mg after the first loose bowel movement,
2mg after each subsequent loose bowel movement. Take no more than 16mg every 24 hours.
Children ages 8-12: 2mg three times a day. Do not administer to children under six
years of age unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Imodium Precautions
Diarrhea may easily lead to dehydration, especially in older patients and Imodium
may mask the effects of dehydration. When using Imodium, older persons should be
sure to get plenty of fluid. Avoid alcohol.
Missed Dose
Skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule.
Do not double the next dose.
Imodium Side Effects
Bloating, skin rash, constipation, loss of appetite, stomach pains, nausea,
vomiting and dry mouth are side effects of Imodium.
Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light.
Overdose
Constipation, central nervous system depression and gastrointestinal irritation
are indicators of an overdose. Seek medical treatment.
More Information
Caution is advised when taking Imodium. Consult your doctor if you have dysentery,
severe colitis or liver disease.
