Isoniazid
Isoniazid Uses
Isoniazid is used to prevent and treat tuberculosiss. It may be taken alone to prevent TB,
but must be used with other antitubercular agents to treat an active case.
How Taken
Adults should take 300mg once a day. Children 4.5 to 9mg per one pound of body weight once a day.
Isoniazid Precautions
Adverse reactions may be more likely and more severe in elderly patients.
This drug may cause drowsiness or dizziness; therefore, do not drive until you determine
how this drug will affect you. Avoid alcohol as it may diminish isoniazid’s
effectiveness and may interact with the drub, increasing the risk of hepatitis.
Missed Dose
Take Isoniazid as you remember you missed a dose in order to help keep a constant level
of medication in your system. However, if it is near the time of your next dose, skip the
missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule.
Do not double the next dose unless advised by your doctor.
Isoniazid Side Effects
Numbness, pain, burning or tingling in hands, and feel, loss of appetite, stomach pain,
clumsiness, yellow discoloration of the eyes or skin, nausea, vomiting, darkened urine,
unusual fatigue are serious side effects and should be reported to your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light. Do not allow the
liquid forms to freeze.
Overdose
Severe seizures, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, slurred speech, blurred vision,
hallucinations, dizziness, and loss of consciousness are indications that an overdose has been taken.
Call your doctor right away.
