Generic Lotensin
(Generic name: Benazepril Hydrochloride)
Lotensin Uses
Lotensin is used to control high blood pressure, to treat congestive heart failure,
to treat patients with left ventricular dysfunction and to minimize further
kidney damage in diabetics with mild kidney disease.
How Taken
For high blood pressure, if you are not already taking a diuretic, 10mg once a
day to start will be prescribed, increased to 20 to 80mg a day in one or two doses.
If you are also taking a diuretic, 5mg a day.
Lotensin Precautions
Adverse reactions may be more likely and more severe in older patients. Avoid such
activities as driving until you determine how the medication affects you.
Consume alcohol only in moderation since it may increase the effect of the drug and
cause an excessive drop in blood pressure.
Missed Dose
Take Lotensin as soon as you remember. If it’s within four hours of your next dose,
skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule.
Lotensin Side Effects
Fever and chills, sore throat and hoarseness, sudden difficulty breathing or swallowing,
swelling of the face, mouth or extremities, impaired kidney function, confusion, yellow
discoloration of the eyes or skin, intense itching, chest pain or palpitations, abdominal
pain and cough are serious side effects and should be reported to your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light.
Overdose
None reported.
Lotensin More Information
Lotensin should be taken on an empty stomach, about one hour before meals.
Follow your doctor’s dietary advise to improve control over high blood pressure and heart disease.
Avoid high-potassium foods like bananas and citrus fruit, unless you are also taking
medications such as diuretics, that lower potassium levels.
