Melatonin Uses
Melatonin is used to treat insomnia and also to prevent jet lag.
How Taken
Melatonin is available in tablet and capsule form in health food stores and local
drug stores throughout the United States; there is no prescription needed.
Melatonin Precautions
If you are over 60, adverse reactions to Melatonin may be more severe.
Therefore do not drive or operate machinery until you determine how the medication
will affect you. Because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved
Melatonin for use to treat insomnia or prevent jet lag, the safety and actual
benefits derived from using this drug can not be guaranteed.
Missed Dose
There are no missed dosage requirements. Most suggest 3-6 tablets or capsules be
taken in a 24 hour period. Depending upon your reason for taking the drug, if
you miss this dose, it is ok to skip it and just resume a normal dosing schedule.
Do not take more than recommended.
Melatonin Side Effects
Feelings of sleepiness, headache, depression, abdominal discomfort and a feeling
of being ñhung overò have been reported as side effects. No other information is available.
Storage
Store medication away from direct light.
Overdose
There have been no cases reported.
More Information
Because there is no regulations of melatonin by any government agency and,
there are no scientfitic studies showing any role melatonin plays in the
treatment of disease or promotion of health, it is advisable not to take
melatonin until there is more known about the drug.
