Generic Mellaril
(Generic name: Thioridazine Hydrochloride)
Mellaril Uses
Mellaril is used to treat moderate to severe psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia,
manic states and drug-induced psychosis. It is also used to treat extreme behavior problems
in children to ease the symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome and to reduce nausea and vomiting
associated with chemotherapy for cancer.
How Taken
Adults should initially take 25 to 100mg three times a day. The doctor may increase the
dose as needed and tolerated, not to exceed 800mg per day.
Mellaril Warnings/Precautions
Adverse reactions are more likely and more severe in older patients. Do not drive or
engage in hazardous work until you learn how this medication affects you. Avoid alcohol
while taking Mellaril.
Missed Dose
Take Melliril as soon as you remember you missed a dose. However, if it is near the time
for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule.
Do not double the next dose.
Mellaril Side Effects
Rapid heartbeat, profuse sweating, seizures, difficulty breathing, neck stiffness,
swelling of the tongue, difficulty swallowing and also a rare condition called
neuroleptic malignant syndrome may develop. This is characterized by stiffness or
spasm of the muscles, high fever and confusion or disorientation.
Call your doctor immediately if you exhibit any of these symptoms.
Storage
Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light.
Do not allow the liquid forms to freeze.
Overdose
Extreme drowsiness, heart rhythm irregularities or palpitations, dry mouth, paradoxical
restlessness or agitation, seizures or loss of consciousness may signal an overdose.
Seek medical treatment.
More Information
While taking Melliril, avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures or hot climates.
Drink plenty of fluids and stay cool in the summertime. Avoid overexposure to sunlight
until you determine if the drug heightens your skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light.
